Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla on Monday received the highest rainfall it has recorded in August in 117 years, PTI reported. In 24 hours, the city received 172.6 mm of rain, the Meteorological Centre’s Director Manmohan Singh said. In August 1901, 277 mm rainfall was recorded in a day, the official added.
The state, which has received 2% excess rainfall since August 1, got 73.8 mm rainfall during the day, the highest in seven years. The previous highest was 75 mm recorded in 2011, Singh said. The cut-off mark for normal amount of daily rainfall is 12.3 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department.
Sujanpur Tira in Hamirpur district recorded the highest rainfall in the state on Monday, with 307 mm.
At least 18 people died in rain-related incidents across the state on Monday and several people were left stranded after heavy rain triggered landslides. The weather department has forecast heavy rainfall in isolated places across the state till Tuesday.
