A policeman was killed and four security forces personnel injured during a gunfight with suspected militants in the Batmaloo area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar early on Sunday morning. Two suspects have been detained.
Director General of Police SP Vaid had earlier said a Special Operations Group personnel was killed, and a Jammu and Kashmir police officer and two Central Reserve Police Force personnel were injured.
Security forces personnel launched a cordon and search operation in Diyarwani in the Batamaloo area on Sunday morning following a tip on the presence of militants, Central Kashmir Range Deputy Inspector General VK Birdi told reporters. The search operation soon turned into an encounter as the militants fired upon the security forces, he added.
In the initial firing, five jawans were injured and had to be taken to hospital, but one died. He has been identified as selection grade constable Parvaiz Ahmad. A militant was also injured and fled the hideout, Birdi said.
Mobile internet has been suspended in Srinagar as a form of precaution.
