An Alaska Airlines flight that was “stolen” crashed near in Washington state after taking off from Seattle’s Sea-Tac International Airport, AP reported on Saturday. There were no passengers on the flight and officials ruled out any links to terrorism.
In a statement, the airlines said it believed a ground service agent employed by its sister carrier Horizon Air was responsible for flying the aircraft without permission. The person is yet to be identified until remains are examined.
Reports said the flight was chased by military aircraft after its unauthorised takeoff. Preliminary information suggested that a mechanic had taken the aircraft. It is not yet known if the person flying it survived the crash.
Sheriff officials said the man was suicidal, according to AP, and that they were investigating further.
The flight was a Horizon Air Q400 that can carry around 75 passengers.
