India’s High Commissioner to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria met Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan in Islamabad on Friday to discuss bilateral relations. Khan will take oath as the prime minister on August 18.
“The Indian High Commissioner briefed the PTI [Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf] leadership on India’s concerns about terrorism and cross-border infiltration,” the commission tweeted. “The High Commissioner congratulated Khan on his electoral success. They discussed a range of issues focusing on prospects of the India-Pakistan relationship.”
“The telephonic conversation between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the PTI chairman has given birth to this new hope,” Bisaria said, according to Dawn.
A statement released by the party said Khan “discussed the need to restart dialogue between Pakistan and India on all outstanding issues, including Kashmir,” according to Hindustan Times.
Khan also expressed concern over human rights violations in Kashmir and expressed hope that the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation conference would be “held soon in Islamabad”. Pakistan was to host the summit in November 2016 but it was cancelled after India decided to stay away due to a terror attack on an Indian Army camp in Uri in Jammu and Kashmir that year and was followed by four other countries.
The meeting was also attended by senior members of the party, including Shireen Mazari, Fawad Chaudhry, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Shahzad Waseem and Naeemul Haque. Indian Deputy High Commissioner to Islamabad J P Singh, also accompanied Bisaria, according to The Indian Express.
