At least 45 people were injured after a fire broke out at a refinery of the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited in Mumbai’s Chembur locality on Wednesday afternoon, ANI reported. The fire reportedly followed an explosion at the plant around 3 pm. Two people are critically injured, according to the Hindustan Times.
While 22 of the injured were allowed to go home after preliminary treatment at BPCL’s first aid centre, 21 people were shifted to Inlaks Hospital in Chembur, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VI) Shahji Umap. The injured suffered fractures and lacerated wounds. “One is being treated in ICU (intensive care unit),” he said.
Nine fire tenders, two foam tenders and two jumbo tankers were sent to the spot to help douse the fire. It has been brought under control but ancillary fire-fighting operations are on, officials said.
“Due to the tremendous heat and build-up pressure, firefighting is being carried out from a safe distance using fixed monitors,” PS Rahangdale, chief fire officer of the Mumbai Fire Brigade, told the Hindustan Times.
