A man was shot dead on the outskirts of Jammu on Saturday morning after he allegedly forcibly entered the home of former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah.
“The intruder breached the main gate and went inside,” Senior Superintendent of Police Vivek Gupta, Jammu, told ANI. “He had a scuffle with the duty officers there. Duty officer was also injured. After that he entered the residence. Subsequently, he was shot dead.”
The police have said the man was unarmed. They identified him as Murad Ali Shah, whose father runs a gun shop at Bantalab in Jammu, PTI reported.
About 200 people, mostly relatives and acquaintances of Shah, staged a protest outside a government hospital in Jammu, demanding an inquiry into the incident. They allegedly did not let doctors perform a postmortem examination for several hours.
“He forced his way through the VIP gate in an SUV,” said SD Singh Jamwal, inspector general, Jammu Zone. Director A case has been registered and an investigation is on.
Abullah’s son and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed the incident. Both him and Farooq Abdullah have Z+ security, the highest level of security Indian leaders get.
Shah drove into the house after crashing through the front gate and entered the main lobby. He broke a glass table and some pictures before climbing the stairs leading to a bedroom, PTI reported the police as saying.
Farooq Abdullah is currently in Delhi for the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.
