Six people were killed and another injured after a car slammed into them while they were standing at a bus stop in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore on Wednesday. Police arrested the driver of the Audi car, reported ANI.
The white Audi was travelling from Pollachi to Coimbatore when the driver, Jagadeesh, lost control near a bus stop on the state highway at 9.30 am, reported The News Minute. The car hit two people waiting at the bus stop and then rammed into an autorickshaw, which was parked on the side of the road.
The auto then crashed into a flower shop and an electric pole. People present at the spot caught hold of Jagadeesh and beat him up. They also claimed Jagadeesh said that he had lost consciousness at the time of the accident.
Coimbatore District Collector Hariharan told The News Minute that police took a blood sample of the driver to check if he was under the influence of alcohol.
“The vehicle was passing by at high speed and I think the driver was drunk since the vehicle swerved,” Charles, an eyewitness, told The News Minute. The car reportedly belongs to the owner of Rathinam College in Coimbatore.
The victims, including four men and two women, were identified as Somu, 55, Suresh, 43, Amsaveni, 30, Subhashini, 20, Srirangadas, 75, and Kuppammal, 60. Two of the victims were inside the autorickshaw when the crash happened. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital. District Commissioner of Police K Periaiah is investigating the matter.
