Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader Imran Khan will take oath as the country’s new prime minister before August 14, Pakistan’s independence day, party leader Naeemul Haq said on Saturday. He said consultations were going on to between PTI, which emerged as the single largest party in the National Assembly after elections on July 25, and others to form the government. “We have done our homework and he will take oath as the prime minister before August 14,” Haq said.
Speaking in Islamabad, Haq said PTI had emerged with the lion’s share of seats in the National Assembly and would form the federal government as well, reported The Express Tribune. “We are ready to work towards the betterment of the country,” he said. “He [Imran Khan] works day and night to secure the rights of every citizen.”
The Election Commission of Pakistan announced the final results of all constituencies of the national and provincial assemblies on Saturday, with PTI winning 115 of the 270 National Assembly seats, reported Dawn. A party needs 137 seats for a simple majority. Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) won 64 seats while the Pakistan Peoples Party finished third with 43.
While the PML(N) emerged as the single largest party in its stronghold of Punjab province again, winning 129 of the 295 provincial seats, the PTI finished a close second with 123 seats, reported Dawn. The PTI has started contacting leaders of different parties and independent candidates. “We will definitely form our government in Punjab as we are in contact with 21 independent candidates,” party spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry said.
The PPP and the PML(N) are also expected to meet soon to devise a joint strategy against the PTI in Parliament.
