Maruti Suzuki on Wednesday said that it was “proactively and voluntarily” recalling 1,279 units of new Swift and Dzire cars to inspect a possible fault in their airbag controller units. These include 566 new Swift models and 713 Dzire ones manufactured between May 7 and July 5.
“Recall campaigns are undertaken globally to rectify faults that may be potential safety defects,” said Maruti Suzuki India in a statement. “Starting July 25, 2018, owners of the vehicles included in this recall campaign will be contacted by Maruti Suzuki dealers for inspection and replacement of the faulty part free of cost.”
The possible fault could lead to airbags not deploying in the event of an accident, an unidentified official told The Times of India.
Maruti Suzuki, India’s biggest carmaker, had asked customers of 52,686 new Swift and Baleno models in May to take part in a service campaign to inspect a possible fault in the brake vacuum hose.
Indian automobile manufacturers follow a voluntary recall policy they had adopted in 2012, PTI reported. Under this, a company can rectify issues free of cost if it feels there are manufacturing defects that compromise the safety of its vehicles.
