News reports have claimed that David Coleman Headley, who was convicted by a United States court in 2013 for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, has been assaulted in a US jail. On July 8, two inmates at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago allegedly attacked the former Lashkar-e-Taiba operative, leaving him in a critical condition, India Today claimed on Monday.
His lawyer John Theis, however, has said he has “no information” about such an incident.
“I cannot disclose where he [Headley] is but I can tell you I have no information that he was attacked,” Theis told the Hindustan Times. Ujjwal Nikam, the special public prosecutor in the 26/11 attacks case also said he has no information about Headley being injured, according to The Times of India.
US officials have not commented on the reports. “We are not able to locate information about this individual,” the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago told PTI. While reports have claimed that Headley is serving his sentence in a Chicago jail, US authorities have never disclosed where he is being held.
A US federal court sentenced Headley to 35 years in prison in January 2013. When the accused-turned-approver was cross-examined by an Indian court in March 2016, he reportedly provided vital information about the Lashkar-e-Taiba and how the 2008 Mumbai attacks were planned. The attacks had killed 166 people.
