The Mumbai Police arrested a man on Sunday for falsely alerting airport authorities about a bomb in the bag of a woman who had rejected him, the Hindustan Times reported.
The man, 28-year-old Qutubudin Hatimbhai Shahiwala, called the control room of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport around 1 am on Saturday, claiming that a 26-year-old Yemeni woman was carrying a bomb.
After the woman arrived at the airport to catch her flight back home, the police detained her. “Nothing was found in her bag,” Assistant Inspector Jayant Gangawane told The Indian Express. “She was allowed to leave after due inspection.”
The police later found that Shahiwala had been threatening the woman for rejecting his advances. The woman verified the number Shahiwala had used to call the control room. A police team then went to the man’s home and took him into custody.
Shahiwala reportedly met the woman on a matrimonial website a few months ago. They decided to meet when she visited Mumbai for family reasons. However, she reportedly rejected him when she found that he had lied about being wealthy.
The police have filed a case against Shahiwala under Sections 506(2) (criminal intimidation) and 505(1)(b) (inciting public fear) of the Indian Penal Code.
