The Pakistani Army on Sunday requested the Supreme Court to act on a claim by a judge that the country’s intelligence agency was interfering in the affairs of the judiciary, PTI reported.

Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of the Islamabad High Court had alleged on Saturday that the Inter-Services Intelligence was manipulating judicial proceedings to get favourable verdicts, including in the case involving former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He alleged that ISI personnel were getting benches formed at their will.

Siddiqui had also claimed that the ISI had approached him with an offer to make him the chief justice of the Islamabad High Court.

Army spokesperson Major General Asif Ghafoor said these were serious allegations against state institutions, including the judiciary and the intelligence agency. “In order to safeguard the sanctity and credibility of the state institutions, honourable Supreme Court of Pakistan has been requested to initiate appropriate process to ascertain the veracity of the allegations and take actions accordingly,” he said.

Earlier, Chief Justice Saqib Nisar had ordered the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority to provide the complete record of the judge’s speech.
