The toll in rain-related incidents in Kerala in the last 10 days reached 28 on Thursday after a person drowned in Kannur district, PTI reported. Over 86,000 people have taken shelter in relief camps across the state, authorities said.
Since the onset of monsoon rains in the state on May 29, as many as 107 people have died in rain-related incidents, the state control room said. The toll in Kozhikode was highest at 20, followed by eight each in Kannur, Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram.
Over 10,000 hectares of crops have been lost in the last two months, the control room said.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in the state for the next three days. Some places saw a respite from rain on Thursday but waterlogging in low-lying areas continued to disrupt normal life.
At least 569 relief camps have been set up in the state, unidentified officials in the control room told PTI. Of these, 194 are in Alappuzha, with 11,090 families, and 156 in Kottayam, with 7,856 families.
With receding water levels, the Southern Railway has relaxed the speed restriction of 20 km per hour, which it had imposed on three rail bridges in Ettumanur-Kottayam section.
The Kerala government has allocated a relief package of Rs 113.19 crore, Revenue Minister E Chandrashekharan said, according to Manorama Online. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has asked the Centre to send a team to evaluate the damage.
