The Tamil Nadu Police have detained six people for allegedly sexually assaulting a 21-year-old Russian tourist in Tiruvannamalai, PTI reported on Wednesday.
The woman was found unconscious in a service apartment in Tiruvannamalai on Monday and was taken to a hospital by one of the six men who were detained. During the medical examination, a doctor found several injuries on her body, including bite marks, and informed the police, PTI reported.
A district official, quoting the police report, confirmed the sexual abuse, reported The Times of India. The woman reportedly checked into a hotel in Tiruvannamalai last week and moved to a service apartment on July 12.
The police have registered a case under Section 376 (punishment for rape) and Section 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code. Police have identified four of the six detained as Dharani, his brother Neelakandan, Manikantan and Venkatesan.
During questioning, one of the six suspects reportedly told police that he accompanied the woman to a temple and an ashram in the city on Friday.
“She has regained consciousness but is unwilling to speak,” an unidentified senior police officer told The Hindu. “We have picked up a few suspects and are conducting inquiries,” a senior police official said.
