Supersonic cruise missile BrahMos was successfully test fired on Monday morning off the Odisha coast from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, PTI reported. The missile flew in its decided trajectory, meeting its mission objectives, Defence Research and Development Organisation officials said.

BrahMos is the world’s fastest supersonic missile, which can fly at almost three times the speed of sound. The guided cruise missile is being developed jointly by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, and Russia’s NPOM. It is named after two rivers – India’s Brahmaputra and Russia’s Moskva.

The test was conducted as part of the missile’s life extension programme. “BrahMos is the first missile whose life has been extended from 10 years to 15 years,” an unidentified official told The New Indian Express. “The technology will make missile systems durable. The test was aimed at gauging its killing probability in extreme conditions.”

The missile was also test fired on May 21 to validate its extension programme. India had tested another BrahMos missile in Pokhran in March.
