Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati said on Sunday that the way the Bharatiya Janata Party was raking up communal matters showed that there was disappointment within the party, PTI reported. It is possible that the Lok Sabha elections may be advanced and held this year itself, she said.
“The way the BJP is raking up religion, communalism, fake news, and criticism of the Opposition, it is quite clear that there is disappointment in the party,” Mayawati said in a press note, according to ANI. “They may even conduct the Lok Sabha elections earlier than scheduled, along with the elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.”
The former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh said the BJP was using communalism, hatred and violence to win elections as their “defeat” in Karnataka had “increased their desperation”. Withdrawing from the ruling coalition in Jammu and Kashmir was the BJP’s first move towards early elections, she claimed.
Mayawati also countered Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claim earlier in the day that previous governments had stalled various development projects. She said the BJP was responsible for incomplete projects as it had been in power for a long time.
“The BJP governments too have contributed in various stalled projects in Uttar Pradesh and across the country,” Mayawati said. “Why is Modi shying away from accepting this?”
She said the government would face a no-confidence motion in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Mayawati’s statements came hours after Modi concluded his two-day visit to Uttar Pradesh. Speaking in Azamgarh on Saturday, Modi had criticised the position of Opposition parties on the matter of triple talaq, and asked if the Congress was a party for only Muslim men.
