A teenager allegedly hanged herself inside the Tilak Vihar police station in West Delhi on Sunday, while the police were dealing with a fight between her family and that of a neighbour.
The 17-year-old girl’s alleged friendship with her 20-year-old neighbour had led to frequent quarrels between their families, police said. “On Saturday night, the two families got into a fist fight and reached the Tilak Vihar police post around 10.30 pm,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vijay Kumar told the Hindustan Times. “The girl and her alleged male friend did not accompany them.”
The girl’s mother told ANI that the man’s family had kidnapped her as they wanted her to marry him.
The girl arrived at the police station around 2.30 am, while the police were trying to pacify the two families. “She said she did not want to return with her mother and brother,” Kumar said. “She said that they would beat her. The local police decided to send her to a women’s shelter.”
The police started speaking to a family member from the man’s side who wanted to file a case against the girl’s family. However, the girl locked herself in a room at the police station and was later found to have hanged herself using her dupatta, Kumar said.
