A witness in the Sheena Bora murder case told the trial court in Mumbai that he saw prime accused Indrani Mukerjea and two others near the spot where the remains of the victim’s burnt body were found.

Sheena Bora was allegedly strangled in a car on April 24, 2012, following which her body was burnt and dumped in a forest in Raigad. Indrani Mukerjea was arrested after the case came to light in 2015, and has been in jail since.

“I came to know that she [Sheena] was murdered and her body was burnt at Gagode Khind [in Raigad district] through television news,” Sandeep Patil, the witness, said according to PTI. “When TV news was displaying pictures of Indrani, [her former husband] Sanjeev Khanna and [driver] Shyam Rai, I realised I have seen these people,” Patil, who runs a gymnasium in Khalapur area in Raigad.

The witness said he was riding a motorcycle, travelling from Shivali to Pen early on the morning on April 24, 2012, when he noticed a parked car, and three persons standing near it. Later, during an identification parade by the police, he identified Indrani Mukerjea, Khanna and Rai. On Thursday, Patil recognised Mukerjea and Khanna when he was asked to identify the accused.

Ajit Mangilal, another Central Bureau of Investigation witness who owns a shop on the old Mumbai-Pune highway, told the trial court that he had sold a 20-litre plastic can to a man he identified as Shyam Rai. Rai had come to his store in a silver-coloured car, and Mangilal identified the woman sitting in the rear seat as Mukerjea.
