Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said on Thursday that his government will modify existing laws to make rape of minor girls punishable by death. State Bharatiya Janata Party media head Devendra Bhasin said Rawat made the remark while addressing the working committee meeting of the party at Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar district, PTI reported.
Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana have already introduced legislation providing death penalty to rapists of children below 12 years of age.
On Thursday, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that all government facilities available to a person, except ration, will be withdrawn if a chargesheet is filed against him accusing him of crimes against women, ANI reported. “No one, be it a man or a woman, will be spared,” Khattar added.
“After the final judgement if that person is acquitted, all the facilities which were withdrawn, will be provided to him again,” Khattar said. “If he is declared a convict then all his facilities will be withdrawn permanently.”
The Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2018, which provides for death penalty to those who rape children below 12 years of age, will be introduced in Parliament during its Monsoon Session, which begins on July 18.
