Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Ministers Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday withdrew their petitions from the Supreme Court seeking time to vacate their government bungalows. Their pleas are “infructuous” as the father and son have now vacated the bungalows, according to Bar and Bench.
On May 7, the court had struck down a state law that allowed former chief ministers to stay in government bungalows. The court called it “arbitrary, discriminatory and unsupported by the Indian Constitution”.
After the order, the state government issued notices to at least six former chief ministers, including Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav. However, the father and son requested the government for a two-year grace period, and later asked the court for “appropriate time” to comply.
Akhilesh Yadav had asked for time to “make arrangements for suitable alternative accommodation”, and his father sought relief citing “security, age and ill-health”, according to The Indian Express.
However, they vacated their official residences on June 2, rendering the petition needless.
