The Gujarat High Court on Thursday revoked the state government's notification granting 10% reservation for the economically backward among upper classes in educational institutions, reported The Times of India. In April, the Anandiben Patel regime had granted the quota that was aimed to help families with an annual income of less than Rs 6 lakh per annum, according to Hindustan Times.
The government's decision came after the Patidar agitation, which left the state paralysed for weeks in 2015. However, the move was not legally sound, as it added to the already existing 49% reservation for the Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the state.
According to Supreme Court guidelines, more than 50% seats cannot be reserved under any situation. State unit chief Vijay Rupani had said, "We [the BJP and Gujarat government] will sincerely take up any legal battle, if required… even to the Supreme Court."
