Bhararitya Janata Party President Amit Shah on Thursday arrived in Ahmedabad, where he will decide on the appointment of the state’s next chief minister, after the incumbent Anandiben Patel resigned on Tuesday. Shah was authorised by the BJP parliamentary board to pick the chief minister, after the party ruled him out for the position, saying he would continue to focus on national politics.
Shah will speak to various stakeholders when he chairs the meeting on the decision later in the day. Two Gujarat leaders, Nitin Patel and Vijay Rupani, are believed to be the top contenders for the job.
On Wednesday, the BJP’s parliamentary board accepted Anandiben Patel’s resignation. Patel had announced her decision to step down on Facebook, saying someone younger should take on the job. She will turn 75 in November 2016.
