The move is part of the Centre's decision to enforce monthly hikes to bring down subsidies. In July, subsidised LPG rates were increased by Rs 1.98 per cylinder. The Centre recently permitted state-owned oil firms to increase the price of kerosene by 25 paise per litre for 10 months. This was also part of the efforts to eliminate subsidies.
Moreover, the rate of non-subsidised LPG, which consumers can buy after they use up their quota of 12 cylinders of subsidised cooking gas, was hiked by Rs. 50.5 per cylinder. They now cost Rs 587 in Delhi. The prices were cut by Rs 11 in July.
On Sunday, the price of petrol in Delhi was slashed by Rs 1.42 per litre and that of diesel by Rs 2.01/litre. The rates were reduced by government-run Indian Oil Corp, which revises prices for petrol in the capital every two weeks, though rates change from state to state owing to local taxes. The price of both fuels fell in other states as well.
