India took control of the second Test against the West Indies at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, after losing the toss and being asked to bowl on Day 1. On a green, lively surface, the Indian seamers, especially Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami, made optimum use of the helpful conditions in the first session, before off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin came in and skittled the rest of the line-up.
Ashwin recorded the 18th five-wicket haul of his career and second of the series as India bowled the West Indies out for just 196. After Ishant and Shami had reduced the hosts to 7/3 in the first hour, Marlon Samuels and Jermaine Blackwood counter-attacked with some good shots to temporarily steady the ship. But once Ashwin came in, the hosts had no response as he ran through the order. The Windies' total would have been even lesser if not for a crucial 38-run last-wicket stand between Miguel Cummins (24 not out) and Shannon Gabriel (15).
By the time India came out to bat, the surface had lost its initial spunk and the tourists then made merry. Shikhar Dhawan threw his wicket away after scoring 27, but Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara ensured that India were in a commanding position at close of play. At 126/1, India will resume their innings on Day 2 70 runs behind.
