The External Affairs Ministry is making final attempts to save an Indian national facing execution on Thursday after being sentenced to death in Indonesia, reported PTI. Union Minister Sushma Swaraj said the government to trying to save Gurdip Singh, 48, who was found guilty in a drug-related case.
"Gurdip Singh is facing death sentence in a drug case in Indonesia. We are making last minute efforts to save him from execution on July 28," Swaraj said on Twitter. Singh, who is from Jalandhar in Punjab, is among 14 people who will be executed by Indonesian authorities in Tangerang Banten province on Thursday.
Singh was arrested at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on August 29, 2004, after security officials found him in possession of 300 g of heroin. Singh reportedly confessed to carrying the drugs on behalf of a Pakistani national, who is also facing execution, but later took back his statement saying he had been forced into giving it.
