Forest Department officials said an adult male rhino drowned in a river in Kaziranga while another one was found dead three days ago. Army personnel, state and national disaster rescue forces have been assisting with rescue work. Officials told PTI that around 200 people were rescued in Chirang district, while in Bongaigaon 150 people were saved from drowning. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said roads have been washed away in Morigaon, Jorhat and Dibrugarh districts and that river embankments in Kokrajhar, Jorhat, Bongaigaon, Dibrugarh and Golaghat districts had been breached.
Arunachal Pradesh has also witnessed flooding because of heavy rains. Parts of Namsai district were inundated on Tuesday by the Noa Dehing, Tengapani and Jengthu rivers – all of which are flowing above the danger mark. Power supply has also been affected in the state. As many as 3,500 houses were marooned while many animals have been washed away. Around 28 relief camps have been set up to accommodate 6,000 people.
Meanwhile, four people died in West Bengal in the last 24 hours because of floods in Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar districts. State Disaster Management Minister Javed Khan said around 58,000 people have been affected in 150 villages.
Officials told PTI that the Jalpaiguri district administration has issued a red alert. Among the worst affected areas are Kalchini, Chitmahal, Kumargram, Phulbari and Dabgram. Teesta, Torsha, Leesh, Geesh, Korola and Mahananda rivers in the region have all crossed the danger mark, reported The Indian Express. Here also, wildlife in the forests of Lataguri and Jaldapara have been affected.
