The Delhi Police filed an FIR against Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women Swati Maliwal for reportedly disclosing the identity of the Burari rape victim, Doordarshan News said. On Sunday, July 24, the 14-year-old Dalit girl succumbed to injuries she had sustained when her kidnappers made her a drink corrosive substance after raping and torturing her in Delhi's Burari region.
The National Commission for Women is looking into the case as well. The 14-year-old was abducted in May by a man who had assaulted her in December 2015. She was kidnapped days before a hearing in the first case.
After the girl's death, Maliwal took to Twitter to criticise police inaction in the case and said, "How many Nirbhayas does Delhi want? We all simply wait for next Nirbhaya to die,". The perpetrator was arrested on Saturday after the DCW issued a notice to the city police, questioning why they had not taken any action against him. The women's panel committee had also asked the police to provide security to the girl's family.
