Former Indian hockey captain Mohammed Shahid died on Wednesday in a Gurgaon hospital after a liver and kidney ailment, according to reports. He was 56 years old. Shahid was a member of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the Moscow Olympics in 1980. He was also part of the team that won the silver medal at the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi and the bronze in the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul. Shahid was given the Arjuna Award in 1981 and the Padma Shri in 1986.
Shahid had been undergoing treatment for jaundice and dengue after being admitted to a hospital last month. He had complained of a stomach ache in June, after which he was first admitted to a hospital, reported The Indian Express. His medical expenses were settled by the Railways, for whom he has worked since 1986, while former players also helped with donations.
