The Supreme Court has given Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi till July 27 to submit his arguments in connection with a defamation case filed against him for blaming the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh for Mahatma Gandhi's assassination. The top court on Tuesday said Gandhi will have to face trial, and that it will look into whether his remarks could be conceived as defamation. It also reproached the Congress leader, saying, "You can't make collective denunciations," NDTV reported.

Gandhi had filed a petition in the apex court, seeking for the defamation case to be quashed. An activist of the RSS had sued Gandhi for accusing the organisation of the freedom fighter's assassination, during his national campaign before the Lok Sabha elections in 2014.

The Congress leader had declined to settle the matter in November last year and said he would appeal to the Supreme Court, which on Tuesday adjourned the case to July 27.
