The British Parliament will debate having a second referendum on the country exiting the European Union, reports said on Tuesday. The debate will take place on September 5. The announcement came days after the Foreign Office rejected a petition, signed by 4 million Britons, calling for another referendum. The Foreign Office had said had said results of the first referendum “must be respected”.
On June 23, Britain voted 52% to 48% to exit the EU. In a letter, more than 1,000 lawyers have informed Prime Minister David Cameron that the results of the referendum were not binding. A leading campaigner of the ‘Remain’ campaign, Cameron announced his resignation after the results. Tory leader Theresa May is the frontrunner to become the country’s next prime minister.
