The Central Board of Excise and Customs has increased the shopping limit for flyers coming in from abroad by five times. Now, a passenger at international airports can buy items worth Rs 25,000 from duty-free shops across the country, reported PTI.

The move was made after passengers complained about the low purchase limit and cited instructions by the Reserve Bank of India that permitted export from and import into India of Indian currency up to an amount not exceeding Rs 25,000.

Apart from this, duty-free shop operators were also asked to display prices of items in Indian rupees and the current rates of exchange. The rate of exchange has to be one published by commercial banks for conversion of foreign currency, or the rate notified by the CBEC for import and export of goods.
