Portugal won their first ever global tournament, defeating France 1-0, thanks to a late, late goal from Eder in the 109th minute, in the second half of extra time, at the Stade de France in Paris.
The biggest talking point of the first 90 minutes was Cristiano Ronaldo's early injury. After a collision with Dimitri Payet in the 16th minute, the Portuguese captain and talisman fell awkwardly on his right ankle and looked in severe pain. Despite two brave attempts to carry on, he ultimately had to walk off the pitch, teary-eyed.
However, Portugal held on grimly throughout and even made a few chances. But France were, by far, the more attacking team, getting more opportunities. Their best chance came right at the end in the second minute of injury time when Andre-Pierre Gignac showed a tremendous turn and unleashed a free but feeble shot, only to see the ball agonisingly rebound off the near post.
Portugal had their own "hitting the post" moment in the 108th minute when Raphaël Guerreiro hit the post from a wrongly given free-kick from 25 yards out. But they wouldn't have long to worry – Eder brought the smiles back on Ronaldo and Portugal's faces with a blistering shot a minute later from out wide, which completely beat France's goal-keeper Hugo Lloris to put them on the brink of history.
Portugal played out the remaining minutes to get to the massive celebrations that followed for their first major football title.
