Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday signed five agreements to improve ties with Tanzania, including a $92-million deal on management and development of water resources. “We’ve just now signed an agreement for $92 million line of credit for water supply system in Zanzibar. We are also working on a number of water projects for 17 cities, for which India is willing to consider an additional $500 million line of concessional credit.”
Modi, who is on the third leg of his four-nation tour in the African continent, delivered a joint statement with Tanzanian President John Magufuli in Dar es Salaam, The Indian Express reported. “President Magufuli has a vision for nation building, development and industrialisation, a vision that is my dream for India, too,” he said, adding that Tanzania and the eastern coast of Africa had “enjoyed strong links with India”.
Health and security were among the other areas of discussions between the two nations. Modi said they had agreed to boost “overall defence and security partnership”, in the maritime field in particular, in addition to fulfilling Tanzania’s “healthcare priorities”.
Before reaching Tanzania, Modi had visited Mozambique and South Africa. He will be heading to Kenya on Monday. His tour of Africa is aimed at improving cooperation with India in the fields of agriculture and food, trade and investment, hydrocarbons and maritime security.
