Pakistani philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi’s donated corneas gave sight to two blind persons in Karachi on Saturday, the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplant said in a statement. After his death on Friday, Edhi’s family fulfilled his will and donated his eyes to SIUT, Dawn reported.
“The death of Edhi sahab has given vision to two most deserving persons, and this is how he had wished his legacy to continue after death,” the statement read. Edhi was among the first 2,000 donors who had registered at the institute to donate their organs after death.
A team of surgeons of SIUT’s ophthalmology department performed the surgery late on Saturday afternoon. “We all hope Edhi sahab’s donation will encourage others to save the lives of patients of end-stage organ failure,” the SIUT statement added.
The head of the Edhi Foundation, which provides a number of social services, died in Karachi on Friday. Edhi, who was 88 years old, had been suffering from complications related to a kidney failure, for which he had been undergoing treatment at SIUT since 2013.
