Iraq Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on Friday sacked Baghdad security chief Abdulamir al-Shimmari after a bombing in the capital on June 30 killed as many as 292 people, reported AFP. A statement released from the Prime Minister's Office said that Abadi issued an order to relieve the Baghdad Operations Commander, as well as several security and intelligence officials of his position.

On Sunday, a truck carrying explosives detonated inside a shopping mall, killing more than 200 people and injuring hundreds of people. The Islamic State had claimed responsibility for the attack. Interior Minister Mohammed al-Ghabban announced his resignation after the attack. Al-Ghabban called security checkpoints around the city “absolutely useless” since the truck likely got past several security points on its way into Baghdad.
