The Patel community, led by the 23-year-old, has been agitating since July 2015 for Other Backward Class status and 27% reservation in government jobs and education. Hardik Patel was detained on sedition charges on October 18 after he had threatened to disrupt the One-Day International cricket match between India and South Africa played in Rajkot. Apart from Hardik Patel, Ahmedabad Police also booked Chirag Patel, Dinesh Bhamaniya and Ketan Patel for waging war against the elected government.
In April this year, the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti rejected the government's announcement of 10% reservation in jobs and academic applications for the economically backward from all non-reserved castes, including Patidars, from May 1.
