Apna Dal on Thursday cut ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party, days after party leader Krishna Patel’s daughter, Anupriya Patel, secured a berth in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Council of Ministers. “The national executive of Apna Dal has decided to snap ties with the BJP as it did not follow the decorum of alliance,” party spokesperson RBS Patel said, adding that the BJP was informed about Anupriya’s activities before she was expelled from the party.
The party allied with the BJP before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and won seats from Mirzapur and Pratapgarh. Party president Krishna Patel said Apna Dal will contest the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and will campaign in Varanasi on August 21, PTI reported.
Newly inducted Minster of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel, who was the general secretary of Apna Dal, was expelled from the party last year reportedly because of a family dispute. However, she has maintained that the party cannot expel her. She had won the Rohaniya constituency in Varanasi in the 2012 Assembly elections.
