Dipa Karmakar, the first Indian woman to qualify for the gymnastics event in the Olympics, was officially named a "World Class Gymnast", by the governing body of world gymnastics, Federation de Internationale de Gymnastique, on Wednesday.
The title is given to some of the best gymnasts in the world. "It’s common for gymnasts from Russia, US, Japan and China. But it’s a big thing for Indian gymnastics,” said her coach BS Nandy, according to The Indian Express.
Karmakar became the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympics after winning gold at the the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in December last year.
