Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Smriti Irani took charge of the textiles ministry on Wednesday, after a massive Cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday. Prakash Javadekar, earlier the Environment Minister, was made a Cabinet minister and given the Human Resource Ministry, which had been under Irani. Javadekar met Irani on Wednesday in Delhi. Irani said that she is determined to strengthen India’s presence in the textile sector.
MJ Akbar also took charge as the new Minister of State, External Affairs, on Wednesday. Several other ministers also took charge of new ministries, including Ananth Kumar (Parliamentary Affairs), Ravi Shankar Prasad (Law) and Venkaiah Naidu (Information and Broadcasting). Nineteen new ministers were inducted on Tuesday, as part of the Cabinet reshuffle.
