The two MBBS students from Chennai who threw a dog off a terrace were arrested and released on bail by Tamil Nadu police on Wednesday. Police had contacted Gautam Sudarshan, who threw the dog from the rooftop, and Ashish Pal, who shot the video, through their parents in their hometowns of Tirunelvelli and Kanyakumari, NDTV reported.
The dog, who was named Bhadra by her rescuers, was found alive on Tuesday. Shravan Krishnan, one of the animal rights activists who fought for police action against the culprits, posted a picture of her on Facebook after she was rescued on Tuesday night. “What breaks my heart is that she was still wagging her tail,” he said in the post.
After being throw off the roof of a two-storey building two weeks earlier, Bhadra, who is around five months old, sustained fractures in her right hind leg and spine. She cannot walk now but is undergoing treatment. Police had filed a case under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act against both Sudarshan and Pal, who were suspended from Madha Medical College on Wednesday.
The video of Bhadra being thrown off the terrace went viral some days ago, triggering outrage among animal lovers and activists who came together to trace the perpetrators of the crime. The Humane Society International had offered a reward of Rs 1 lakh to anyone who could provide valid information on the men.
