Nigel Farage, leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party, announced his decision to step down on Monday. Farage said he had “done his bit” and that the party was in a “pretty good place”, and added that he would serve his time as a Member of the European Parliament. Farage also said that Britain needed a “Brexit prime minister”. Britain had voted to leave the European Union on June 24.
British Prime Minister David Cameron resigned after the referendum results were in, and right leader Boris Johnson, who was pegged to be the next PM, also announced his decision not to run for the post. The referendum, or Brexit as it came to be known, has left Britain’s population more polarised than ever before, led to a slew of racist attacks and caused its markets to plummet. On Saturday, thousands of Londoners gathered to protest against the referendum results.
