Bihar's Class 12 topper in the arts stream, Ruby Rai, has told police that her father made her the top-ranker while she had only asked him to help her pass the examinations. "I had only told papa to get me passed, but they went ahead and made me topper," The Indian Express quoted her as saying.

Patna Special Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj, who is leading the Special Investigation Team that is probing the scam, told the English daily, "The arts topper was very forthright in accepting that she did not deserve to be a topper. She had expected second division at best. She now blamed her guardians and principal of Vishun Roy College Bachcha Rai for making her the topper."

The student (pictured above) informed police that principal Rai was a distant relative, and that her father could have been in touch with him regarding her marks, Hindustan Times reported. She added that she never had any direct contact with Rai. The principal is suspected to be the kingpin in the scam.

The Bihar School Examination Board cancelled the results of Rai and another topper, Saurav Shrestha. Both students had failed to answer basic questions related to their subjects in a video that went viral. Following the controversy, the board had asked all 14 toppers to appear for a re-test. The SIT arrested Ruby Rai on June 25 after she failed the re-test. She had missed the re-examination on June 3 and again on June 17, citing health reasons.
