England soccer coach Roy Hodgson resigned as manager after Iceland defeated them 2-1 on Monday. Iceland is the smallest country to participate in the tournament. Hodgson’s contract was set to expire after Euro 2016 ended. “My contract was always going to be up after this tournament. I would have loved to have stayed on another two years, but now it is time for someone else to take over this group of players,” he said after the match.

“Now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of this young, hungry and extremely talented group”, he said. The Football Association backed his decision. Hodgson was manager from 2012.

England’s Wayne Rooney scored on a penalty kick in the fourth minute, and Iceland countered with Ragnar Sigurdsson scoring a goal in the sixth minute. In the 18th minute, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson struck another goal to give Iceland the lead. Iceland will now face France in the quarter-finals.
