British Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday said he will resign, and that the United Kingdom is expected to have a new prime minister by October. His statement came soon after Britain voted to leave the European Union. Pro-independence leaders like United Kingdom Independence Party's Nigel Farage asked for Cameron's resignation when early counting trends showed that the 'Leave' camp would win the referendum.
He said, "I do not think it would be right for me to be the captain who steers the country to its next destination," adding that he was honoured to have had the post for six years. His announcement came after the value of the British pound dropped to a 31-year low on forex markets, and was on course for its biggest one-day loss in history.
