The Law Ministry has prepared a Bill that will require the Bombay and Madras High Courts to use “Mumbai” and “Chennai” instead, The Hindu reported. Both cities changed from their colonial names to the new ones in the ‘90s, but the courts had not made the switch. The two courts have agreed to the move, the reported added.
According to officials, the government had originally considered passing an executive order on the matter, but realised a Bill was needed as the names of the courts were given under the Indian High Courts Act of 1861. The third high court established under the same law – Calcutta – has yet to respond to the government’s intimations.
The Centre will also look into other similar cases after the Bill is passed. This includes Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the report said.
