Former Indian athlete Anju Bobby George on Wednesday quit as President of the Kerala Sports Council after earlier accusing the state sports minister of harassing her and other members of the council. George had filed a complaint in Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s office against EP Jayarajan earlier in June. He had allegedly threatened her and other members of dire consequences, after accusing them of supporting an opposition party.

The Arjuna award winner told news channel Times Now that the rest of the council will also resign soon. Indian Hockey team captain PR Sreejesh and former athlete Preeja Sreedharan are also members of the council.

The earlier state government, led by Congress’ Oommen Chandy, had appointed George as head of the council. The Left defeated the Congress in the recently concluded state elections in May. This is the second controversy that Jayarajan has been embroiled in this month. He had earlier said that boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who died from septic shock at the age of 74 on Saturday, was "an eminent sports personality of Kerala and is one who has won a gold medal, thereby raising Kerala's position in the world".
