Controversial film Udta Punjab earned Rs 10.05 crore on its opening day on Friday, reported PTI. Its producers said that the movie did particularly well in North India, especially in Punjab and Delhi. “In Rajasthan, Gujarat and in the Eastern belt the response is weak," Rajesh Thadani, film distributor told PTI. The film did well despite having been leaked online the day before its release.
Udta Punjab was embroiled in a controversy after the Central Board of Film Certification recommended as many as 89 cuts in the film, including all references to the state of Punjab, except in the title. The film’s makers then moved the court against the CBFC’s cuts, which many political leaders termed a politically-motivated move.
According to the CBFC and leaders in Punjab, the movie portrayed the state and its community in bad light. The Abhishek Chaubey-directed movie deals with the subject of substance abuse in Punjab.
