Australia beat India 3-1 in a penalty shootout in the final of the Champions Trophy after the game ended 0-0 in normal time. India missed three of their penalties, while Australia missed just one. However, the penalty shootout was marred by controversy after India contested the referee's decision to ask Australia's Daniel Beale to retake his penalty, after it was stopped by goalkeeper PR Sreejesh.
According to India, Beale had asked for a referral of an intrusion by Sreejesh after the official time of eight seconds and his appeal to retake the shot was invalid, reported The Times of India. After a delay of over an hour, the International Hockey Federation rejected India's complaint and announced Australia as the winner. This was Australia's 14th Champions Trophy triumph.
