Russia's track and field team will remain barred from competing at the Rio Olympics after the International Association of Athletics Federations decided not to lift their suspension on Thursday, according to the New York Times. The original suspension was imposed in November, after a report by the World Anti-Doping Agency indicted Russia of state-sponsored doping programmes last year.
The International Olympic Committee will, however, meet on June 21 to discuss "whether and if individual athletes should be given individual justice”.
The future of Russian sport is in jeopardy after the original WADA report provided intricate details of state-sponsored doping. Additionally, 23 Russian athletes who participated in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics have tested positive for doping offences.
