Bollywood film Udta Punjab, which has been at the centre of a censorship controversy, was leaked online on Wednesday, two days before its scheduled release, The Indian Express reported. The filmmakers, however, manage to take it off torrent sites within a few hours. The download links now show the message “removed due to a copyright complaint”.
Screengrabs of the copy posted online showed that the version uploaded was likely a copy submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification, as some scenes on it were those the censor board had wanted cut out. Representatives for the film have refused to comment on the issue.
The Shahid Kapoor-starrer sparked a row when the film certification board asked the producers to remove all references to Punjab except for in the title because the film, according to them, portrayed the state and the community in bad light. The board had reportedly asked for 89 cuts in the film. Scheduled for release across the country on June 17, Udta Punjab deals with the subject of substance abuse. The Bombay High Court on Monday ordered the CBFC to issue a fresh rating certificate the film and asked for only one cut to be made.
